Angelina Jolie Won’t Defy GRAVITY. Project In Trouble?

September 1, 2010RamaNo Comments,

WB wanted Angelina Jolie for Alfonso Cuaron‘s movie GRAVITY which would have Jolie carry the movie (much like what Tom Hanks did in Cast Away but in space) with Robert Downey Jr. in a small supporting role. Via Deadline, despite the big money offer, Jolie has decided not to do the project…

Jolie’s busy directing her Bosnian war love story and she’s attached to a gazillion other projects that she can freely take on or turn down.
Studio badly needs a female star power that can carry this $80 Million film. Who else but Jolie is able to do that? Other names considered for the lead role were Marion Cotillard, Blake Lively, Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall, Olivia Wilde, Carey Mulligan, Sandra Bullock, Natalie Portman, Naomi Watts.. out of all those my choice would be Bullock, not just because I’m a big fan, even though Mulligan, Cotillard and Watts are just as talented, Bullock can draw more box office money, since that’s what the studio seems to be looking for.

Cuaron co-wrote this space thriller with his brother Jonas. In GRAVITY, Downey will play the leader of a team posted at a remote space station. While he and a female colleague are traveling outside the space station, repairing Hubble Telescope, the other team members are decimated by debris from an exploded satellite. The female lead who’s also the surviving Astronaut, desperately tries to return home to Earth and her daughter, her story is what the movie will be focusing on.

Framestore, U.K’s biggest FX company (The Golden Compass, Avatar) indicated that the timeline will be set in the present day or near future, the film will be full of CG and shot in Cuaron’s trademark fluid style.
Because it’s set in space, most shots require every element to float in zero-gravity.
“This is a hybrid of a fully animated, photo-real feature film with a blockbusting visual effects movie… This is CG feature animation meets real world on a large and beautiful scale.”
