This past summer, Universal announced that it’s going to develop BATTLESHIP movie, the object of the classic Harsbro game is to sink the opposition’s ships by guessing where they sit on the grid, the object of the movie plot however is still kept under wraps.
Hancock director Peter Berg is going to tackle the project using a script that will be written by the brothers Jon and Erich Hoeber who adapted WHITEOUT starring Kate Beckinsale and also RED which is another comic book movie with Bruce Willis attached to star.
Variety reported that BATTLESHIP will be released on July 1st, 2011. in the same summer as THOR and FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA.. ouch!
Universal wants BATTLESHIP to be an epic naval action adventure.
Turns out, Berg has long been fascinated with this world, at one point he even tried to convince Tom Rothman of 20th Century Fox to make a film about John Paul Jones, the founder of the American Navy, of course Fox probably didn’t think Berg’s idea was cool enough but X-Men Origins: Wolverine on the other hand.. pffh!

The plot for BATTLESHIP movie hasn’t been disclosed yet but Berg described it as “a contemporary story of an international five-ship fleet engaged in a very dynamic, violent and intense battle”
However, this would not be Berg’s next gig because he’s still got HANCOCK 2 and the new DUNE in his pocket.
And after all that is yet another Navy-related gig, Peter Berg also signed to direct LONE SURVIVOR for Universal about a Navy SEAL team that is sent to Afghanistan and is ambushed. Berg did a movie about a team being violently ambushed a couple of years ago called The Kingdom.
