COWBOY BEBOP Too Costly For Fox So It’s Getting A Rewrite

I’m up here in Stockton, CA and I’m about to drive down to Fresno so that makes a couple of hours but before I go, I wanna let you in on what’s going on with COWBOY BEBOP Live action movie, based on the popular anime series about a group of bounty hunters traveling on their spaceship, the Bebop, in the year 2071 and they hunt down galaxy’s most ruthless criminals when a cataclysmic astral gate accident has scattered humanity across the solar system. Keanu Reeves is set to play the lead character Spike Spiegel but he told MTV recently that Fox thinks the project is too expensive so scribe Peter Craig is forced to do rewrite.

“There’s a draft of the script, but the writer did such a great job [that] in order to make the movie, you would need half a billion dollars,”
“So the studio went, ‘This movie is fantastic and it would cost half a billion dollars,”
“so he’s doing a rewrite.”

Of course, Reeves was saying it jokingly but now I’m curious about this so-called fantastic script that would cost so much to realize it on the big screen.

Typical Fox though, the studio probably wants it to cost no more than $150 Million so we can get a half-ass job like X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
I feel sorry for Peter Craig who’s worked closely on this with original show director Shinichiro Watanabe and Craig’s first draft was incredibly faithful to the show and this scared Fox. No wonder we get so many adaptations that don’t do the original material justice, it’s because some non-geek, non-fan studio heads are too stingy to invest some more money to reach perfection.
On the other hand, maybe this is a sign that they should’ve left COWBOY BEBOP alone and not move forward with this live-action feature.
When asked who else Reeves would expect to be involved in the movie, his only answer was

“Everyone is in there,”

I think what MTV meant was if there’s any other actor being considered besides him, not about if all the COWBOY BEBOP characters are going to be in the movie.
