George Weah

Those of us who grew up with Soccer, like yours truly, would hear the name George Weah and quickly remember his fantastic moves on the field, his goals, especially in his years with AC Milan. Before Ronaldinho, before Zidane, there was George Weah, one of the best soccer players alive, the only one to have won FIFA World Player of the Year, European Footballer of the Year and African Footballer of the Year, all in one season (1995). I know of this Weah,.. what I don’t know much about.. is the politician Weah. Via Hollywood Reporter, Both sides will be serve as material for the biopic that will be directed by Dermot Mulroney

This will mark Mulroney’s 2nd directorial film after the rom-com LOVE WEDDING MARRIAGE which already finished filming.
The timing is hilarious.. we’re still enjoying the intensity of WORLD CUP 2010.. it’s like Superbowl but 20 times more exciting because the whole world.. literally the whole world is watching.

I grew up watching soccer since I was a kid,.. so Weah playing in serie A was one of the highlights of TV-watching in my country since it really didn’t have a lot of channels back then.
After coming to America, I lost track a bit, which is why I didn’t know that in 2005, Weah, who was already active in helping African children and protecting them from being used as rebel soldiers, was interested in politics. His home country Liberia is one of the most dangerous places in the continent but he ran for President in 2005.. at a heartbreaking cost because his opponents burned his mansion and raped his family.
But that did not discourage the former world soccer super star, when the laws of Liberia started requiring presidential candidates to have a college degree, Weah spent the past few years studying in the U.S., hoping to enter presidential round again.
I can’t help but to admire such determination.. such love for his country that sadly only loves him back to a certain degree.
This should make for a great, powerful, gritty, inspiring movie. Mulroney is now looking to find a writer and to raise financing since the project is intended to be “a globe-spanning biopic with political intrigue and soccer drama”
