So the super secret project that Guillermo Del Toro said at Comic-Con he would announce soon enough is.. via Deadline, the long overdue adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft‘s tale AT THE MOUNTAIN OF MADNESS

The movie will be shot in 3D for Universal Pictures but GDT is not the only big name here.. James Cameron (Avatar) is going to be involved as a producer.
Cameron is also producing the 3D remake of FANTASTIC VOYAGE over at 20th Century Fox.
AT THE MOUNTAIN OF MADNESS has been a long time dream project for Guillermo Del Toro, the book originally published in 1936 was about a group of explorers in Antartica who stumble onto a group of creatures called “Elder Things” and what comes after that is terror after terror. GDT’s cup of tea.

It was first housed at DreamWorks in 2004 by GDT and producers Susan Montford and Don Murphy. GDT and Matthew Robbins wrote the script, the project was then bought by Universal when it greenlit GDT’s Hellboy 2. But MADNESS was put on hold when GDT accepted Peter Jackson‘s offer to co-write and direct the ambitious 2-part Tolkien adaptation, THE HOBBIT. But as you know after frustrations over MGM’s mess and all the delays, GDT decided to leave THE HOBBIT. But that’s good for us GDT fans because it now means he can return to the gazillion projects that he’s been attached to before THE HOBBIT snatched him. Projects like… AT THE MOUNTAIN OF MADNESS. Back at Comic-Con ’10 he also announced that he’s developing HAUNTED MANSION reboot but so far he’s only producing and not set to direct

Here’s what GDT told MTV back in 2008 about adapting AT THE MOUNTAIN OF MADNESS

“It’s not hard to be faithful to Lovecraft because what is great about the novel is that it’s a compilation of really dry scientific annotations that happen to be annotating something really scary. There is no character or dramatic thread,” he insisted. “You take those document and you then create a story. If you were [just rigidly faithful] you would be doing a National Geographic special on a crew that disappeared in an exploration mission.
