India Wants THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Cut. David Fincher Says Aw Hell No!

January 28, 2012RamaNo Comments,

I grew up in Asia so I was used to watching Bollywood films with their dance number and their corrupt police dramas. That formula gets old after a while. India may not be as uptight as China when it comes to censorship but it’s definitely not all chill…

David Fincher‘s THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO was scheduled to be released in India on Feb. 10, but that won’t happen anymore now because Hollywood Reporter said that India’s Central Board Film Certification wanted some of the scenes in the film to be cut but Fincher has refused to give in to their demands.

Those of us who’ve seen the Americanized remake could easily and quickly guess which scenes that have made India’s CBFC uncomfortable

The two sex scenes between Salander (Rooney Mara) and Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig)
The lesbian scene with Lisbeth and hottie she met at a bar.
The anal rape scene
The scene where she tortured her rapist while a video of her being raped plays in the background.

Those are the scenes that India’s CBFC hated, they wanted those scenes cut, not blurred, but cut!
Look, it’s not about pro or anti rape, it’s about the fact that if you cut those scenes, you’d take away an integral part of the story, you’d take away the characters’ motivations and that would ruin the entire film.
Sony has decided that it will NOT release THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO in India.
So if you’re movie fans living in India and you’re also fans of Fincher’s, I guess you’re double screwed.
The following is the statement from Mumbai-based Sony Pictures India..

“Sony Pictures will not be releasing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in India. The Censor Board has adjudged the film unsuitable for public viewing in its unaltered form and, while we are committed to maintaining and protecting the vision of the director, we will, as always, respect the guidelines set by the Board,”

I guess India won’t be seeing Michael Fassbender’s SHAME either.

But let’s face it, I’m sure either THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO or SHAME would still be available for sale on the sidewalks or the streets of India, lo quality for lo price, if you catch my drift
