James Cameron Says 3D Is Not A Fad, It’s A Renaissance

Today I shared with you the info from AP about James Cameron preaching 3D in Seoul, Korea, where he also revealed that AVATAR 2 release date will be announced in a few months from now. I’m about to go watch the midnight showing of ROBIN HOOD, but I don’t wanna leave you hanging’, here’s something for discussion I suppose…
Ya know how some of us think or even hope that this 3D is just a temporary fad that comes and then goes like friendster and myspace.. zing! Well, Cameron begs to differ, he thinks that in less than 25 years, 2D as we know it will be extinct because 3D will become the standard mainstream format for film, TV, online content including entertainment sports, music shows you name it.
“Avatar” has proved that 3-D technology is not just a fad but a revolution changing how the audience chooses to consume media and entertainment content, the 56-year-old director said in a speech to the Seoul Digital Forum, an annual technology and media gathering.
“Quite simply, where they had a choice, the audience was selecting for the best possible way to see the movie,” he said. “And they saw 3-D as the premium viewing experience.”
Cameron likened what he called the “3-D renaissance” to the advent of sound and color in motion pictures.
But he said full adoption of the enhanced format will require less time than the 25 years it took for color movies to become standard.
Not only is he a preacher of 3D, he’s also a prophet, proclaiming the dawn of a new era.. 3D Renaissance!..
For one you gotta admire the passion and the conviction on this guy, he’s stubborn and determined, not just in filmmaking but in real life an outspoken environmentalist
But is Cameron really stating the facts or is he borderline delusional.. so caught up in all this 3D, of the success of AVATAR that he badly wants everything and everyone to adopt his way without considering the folks who like 2D entertainment as it is.
Better question would be.. are you starting to believe what he believes.. that 3D will erase 2D from the face of the planet?
Most studios these days 3D convert their movies only because they want more box office money, not necessarily because they want to give us the most visually rich movie watching experience for us to enjoy. I know people who are starting to get annoyed by those uncomfortable 3D glasses, not to mention paying extra for 3D movies.
Let’s forget about theaters for a moment, Cameron is also pushing for 3D TVs and 3D laptops which by the way are available.
Cameron said 3D’s obstacle is not the technological shortcomings, but it’s the lack of 3-D content to watch,
But there’s already a prospect Internet streaming of 3-D movies, Cameron said he’ll help the industry to embrace 3D without the possibility of consumer backlash.
What if consumer backlash is inevitable.
What is your take on all of this? Are we going to find ourselves surrendering to buying 3D TV and 3D laptop because everybody else is doing so or that no other option is around anymore?
If you ask me.. I don’t believe in this 3D renaissance.. as much as Cameron thinks 3D is here to stay.. I still think it’s a fad..
Now, I’d be lying if I said it’s not an enjoyable fad because How To Train Your Dragon proved that 3D enhancement successfully made it a real immersive thrill ride, unlike some movies… (cough) Avatar (cough)!

So.. What Did You Think About TRON: LEGACY? Dec 17, 2010

Everything in 3d would be pretty lame, I don’t know it just seems like with more 3D the more film makers are going to be focusing on how “cool” the movie will look in 3D and less on the plot and the actual movie itself making more movies come out that are just.. well stupid.
It is also hard for people with vision problems to see 3D, glasses on top of glasses kind of suck. Also people that can only see out of one can simply just can’t see 3D movies. So sure have 3D movies, but don’t take out just regular 2D.
yes cameron, it IS just a fad, its bad for your eyes, it was a fad in the fiddies and its a fad now
