James Cameron Trashes PIRANHA 3D

August 30, 2010Rama3 Comments,

Most of you probably don’t know this and I don’t blame ya, but you can look up IMDb and find that the billion dollar director James Cameron (Avatar, Terminator, Titanic) helmed the 1981 sequel Piranha Part Two: The Spawning. But when asked by Vanity Fair what he thought of the recent Alexandre Aja-directed remake PIRANHA 3D, Cameron said he didn’t like that 3D was being used in that manner..

You’ve got to remember: I worked on Piranha 2 for a few days and got fired off of it; I don’t put it on my official filmography. So there’s no sort of fond connection for me whatsoever. In fact, I would go even farther and say that… I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but that is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like Friday the 13th 3-D. When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial lifespan, they did a 3-D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip. And that’s not what’s happening now with 3-D. It is a renaissance—right now the biggest and the best films are being made in 3-D. Martin Scorsese is making a film in 3-D. Disney’s biggest film of the year—Tron: Legacy—is coming out in 3-D. So it’s a whole new ballgame.

Say what you want, Cameron,.. I had fun watching PIRANHA 3D and I’m not going to apologize for it, definitely not going to apologize for marveling at Kelly Brook‘s glorious body in 3D, even if it’s post conversion.

  1. Cameron is really starting to annoy me. The guy says 3D is the future but I’m seriously now boycotting it. I can’t stand the price hike. Hell, its getting to the point we won’t have an option… like Piranha 3D. There was no 2D version… so i was FORCED to pay the extra bucks if i cared to watch the film. Not cool.

Instead of giving us the option of seeing 2D movies in 3D… its got to the point of Hollywood giving us the option of watching 3D movies in 2D…. and soon we won’t even have that option. Screw 3D…. I’M DONE WITH IT!!!!
