Comingsoon chatted with Jeremy Renner who’s out promoting MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL and I’m glad that the site asked him the question of why he signed himself to a bunch of big budget blockbuster franchises because it seems that’s what he’s been doing ever since he received Oscar nod for The Hurt Locker.
Renner’s got MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, THE AVENGERS, HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNGERS, THE BOURNE LEGACY. So what’s up, man?!…

“I never went after a big franchise,”
“I never went after a big action movie. They just sort of kind of manifested in a way… It started off by me saying, ‘Why not be in a movie that will play all over the world, but that still has something that I can do in it?’ Why not?”

Great answer! Why the hell not?!
I can understand it because I’m sure after years of doing indie flicks and then finally getting Oscar nod, two Oscar nods, why not do projects that aren’t indie anymore because now you have more options to choose from, hell that’s what any actor would do.

“It was kind of impossible for me to say no [to these films],”
“as long as there was stuff for me to do character-wise, selfishly, it’s just a bigger setting. A bigger stage.”

It’s official! Renner knows how to play it smart.
As you know, Renner will be playing Hawkeye in Marvel’s ultimate superhero movie, THE AVENGERS which opens next summer

Via Collider, he was asked about the possibility of HAWKEYE stand alone film..

“I don’t know. There are a lot of variables in that one. Would they want to make one? What would it be about? There are a lot of things. I suppose, if they all align, then it could be interesting ‘cause I certainly like the character. But, I don’t know what the future holds.”

Safe answer I suppose
He then talked more playing the role in THOR and about THE AVENGERS movie..

“It’s actually difficult because there’s not a lot to do. In Thor, I had to just stand in a bucket and hold my bow and arrow. What’s the character? I have no idea. I was thrown into that very quickly, so it was like, “Am I trapping myself?” It’s a little strange. I don’t know if it’s a good thing. I don’t think I’d go about it, normally, that way. It’s certainly a different way to go about taking on a role.”

“Look at how many characters are in that thing. It was the ultimate challenge for Joss Whedon, who knows that universe so well. There was no one better to write it. He was so challenged, to write and direct that thing. I don’t know how you put that many characters in a movie like that. It’s immense. But, with that, you pass the baton. You get to work with very few of them ‘cause everybody’s got their own thing going on. Someone’s in the air, flying around. I’m on the ground, shooting a bow and arrow. There are a lot of things happening. I have no idea what that movie looks like. Zero idea. Most of the time, I have a good idea of how it’s going to turn out because I’ve seen so much of it, but I have no idea. I feel like I might be an extra in it. I’m not sure.”

THE AVENGERS opens May 4th, 2012
