Joe Johnston Says We Are Due For JURASSIC PARK 4

I don’t know about you but The Lost World was one of the worst sequels that Steven Spielberg ever directed, all the movie did was add even more people that would be running away from the Dinosaurs and voila you had yourself a movie, and don’t even get me started on Jurassic Park 3. Once the directing job got handed over to Joe Johnston, I knew we were in for a huge mistake. Adding that supposedly new dinosaur that’s bigger and more dangerous than T-Rex sounded awesome at first, plus that’s how it is with sequels anyway, you gotta introduce a new character otherwise the story would get boring but after all that they’d still end with a group of velociraptors and a group of military rescue team, it’s like taking the easy way out. Not to mention copying the first movie, which also ended with Velociraptors unintentionally coming to the rescue.
Johnston has a new movie come Valentine season 2010, THE WOLFMAN and AICN had a chat with him a while back and the conversation turned into whether or not there would be a JURASSIC PARK 4…
“There is a great story for the fourth one that I would be interested in getting involved with and it’s nothing like the first three,”
“It sort of takes the franchise off in a completely different direction, which is the only way I would want to get involved.”
Johnston said that there won’t be another storyline about a group of people struggling to survive a dinosaur attack because they’ve already done that three times
But seriously folks, how else are you going to tell a Jurassic Park story without having people struggling to survive a dinosaur attack? that’s like the bread and butter of this franchise, fans would pay to see the movie to see people somehow outrun these creatures either in confine spaces or on a vast field.
“Why would anybody go back to that island?”
“It was hard enough to figure out the second and third reason for them to go, but it would take it off in a whole other trilogy basically, but when it gets to that level it’s sort of about studios and Steven [Spielberg's] thing and who knows. I think we are at that point where we are due for another one if we are going to do it.”
They had what four years between them? 1992… 1996 or 1997, and then 2001, so we are past due. I don’t know, but we will see.
The idea of JURASSIC PARK 4 is only good in talks. But just like TERMINATOR franchise, maybe it’s time for us to accept that JURASSIC PARK franchise is dead and buried and that we should just cherish the first installment, the true classic, without remembering the sequels ever existed at all.
The only other way might be a prequel, showing how the park was built but where’s the fun in that?! What do you think?
