Johnny Depp As PANCHO VILLA

I know Johnny Depp is a versatile actor, you can throw him any role and he’ll play it like a natural, but can he play the most iconic Mexican revolutionary general? At least that’s what Serbian director Emir Kusturica thinks. According to Variety, Kusturica who actually has worked with Depp before on Arizona Dream, back in 1993, is in talks with People Magazine’s sexiest man on earth 2009 to star as Pancho Villa in the biopic SEVEN FRIENDS OF PANCHO VILLA AND THE WOMAN WITH SIX FINGERS…

The report says the script is already completed by scribe Gordan Mihic but filming won’t start until 2011, obviously because Depp’s got PIRATES 4, THE LONE RANGER just to name a few.
Production will take place partly in Mexico, where Villa became a guerilla fighter and a hero to the poor, I don’t know much about the man but he sounds like Robin Hood with stache, gun, and viva la rasa!
The movie is based on the biographical novel THE FRIENDS OF PANCHO VILLA by author James Carlos Blake, it chronicles Villa and his compadres having a great time fighting and robbing the rich, but also dancing, partying and making love.

Here’s the thing, this movie is going to be in Spanish language so Depp will act in Spanish. For some reason when I heard about this info, the first thing came to mind was Marlon Brando in Viva Zapata!
My point is.. and no offense to Depp, but there’s a perfectly good Antonio Banderas who already played Pancho Villa before in TV movie And Starring Pancho Villa Himself, how come he didn’t get the call instead? Banderas also played Guido in NINE musical broadway but his character got played by Daniel Day-Lewis in NINE the movie version.. it’s tough to be.. how do you say.. ah yes.. Banderas in this business.
