Whoa!.. Hugh Jackman is like the Burgess Meredith and the robot is like Rocky Balboa in this first look image, via USA TODAY, of REAL STEEL, directed by Shawn Levy. View the entire image after this jump…

In this image below, Hugh Jackman‘s character is instructing a Samurai-inspired robot called NOISY BOY. The article said the robot is a real device, not a digital visual effect. Although mo-capture animation is used in this movie when the machines are busy in fighting, 19 real life animatronic giants were created in scenes where the robots interact with human actors. Director Levy said the method is encouraged by Spielberg, since this is a DreamWorks movie, to get that “grounded reality” performance.

REAL STEEL for Dreamworks, starring Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) and Evangeline Lily (TV’s Lost).

Also joining the cast are Hope Davis, James Rebhorn and Olga Fonda.

REAL STEEL is about a former boxer (Jackman) who gets one last shot at the title when he teams up with his long-lost son, Max (Goyo) to train a unique robot for the upcoming Real Steel World Championship. The story is set in ain a world where the new gladiators are 2000-pound robots with human qualities. Jackman’s hopes for glory in Robot Boxing is hampered by his access to sub-standard robot parts, until he discovers a discarded robot that always seems to win

Mackie will play a boxing promoter
Lilly will play a friend of Jackman’s character.

Film is being directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and produced by Don Murphy, Susan Montford and Shawn Levy. Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke, Steve Starkey, Josh McLaglen, and Mary McLaglen are all executive producing. John Gatins has written the script.

REAL STEEL is scheduled to open on November 18th, 2011

The premise is based on a short story by Richard Matheson that was adapted into an original Twilight Zone episode titled STEEL starring the late great Lee Marvin.
