I’ve said it a thousand times before that I didn’t grew up reading GREEN LANTERN comic, I’m not really a hardcore fan of the superhero with the powerful ring but those of you who know better might understand why it takes big dollar amount to get the movie right. Production has been moved from Australia because of the dollar problem, word has it filming will start in New Orleans in April 2010 but director Martin Campbell told Empire, via coventrytelegraph that it’s going to take even more work and more money just to handle the VFX alone..

Campbell said: “It’s daunting. Just the process, something like 1,300 visual effects shots, it’s mind-blowing, quite honestly.”

Campbell explained that the amount of FX work was due to the Green Lantern’s powers generated through his mystical ring.

“It’s energised by a battery on the planet of Oa, which taps into the willpower of everyone in the universe.

“From that ring you can form constructs. So if you got into a fight, you could form a giant fist. Or a fighter plane.”

All the digital wizardry will be expensive

The last time a ring caused so much sweat and headache was the one that caused Frodo so much pain and suffering as he tried to take it to Mount Doom in Mordor. But of course I’m talking a whole different ring here, a different ball game.
I looked up Wiki and please correct me if I’m wrong, so far I’ve learned that the GREEN LANTERN ring could do all kinds of crazy out-of-your-mind tricks including the following abilities…

  • Creates solid ‘light energy’ which is only limited by the mind
  • Constructs of green ‘solid-energy,’ often of tremendous size and/or complexity.
  • Flight, including flight at speeds beyond that of light.
  • Instantaneous flight across the galaxy and to other galaxies through wormholes.
  • Plasma bolts.
  • Ability to walk through walls by traveling through ‘the Fourth Dimension’ [Alan Scott]
  • The rings can act as semi-sentient computers, including accessing the Book of Oa, a massive database of everything from the laws of the Guardians and the Corps to the history of the universe.
  • Time travel (One solitary power ring cannot generate enough power for time travel. Several power rings are needed to complete this feat.)
  • The rings are still reliant on the lantern-shaped power batteries, but no longer limited to 24 hours’ charge as they originally were. Kyle Rayner’s ring was the first ring to absorb more power than originally thought, having stored the main power battery’s energy following its explosion on Oa.
  • Telepathic powers.
  • Translation of virtually all languages.
  • Force field generation.
  • Radiation, including simulated kryptonite radiations.
  • Generate “earplugs” to block out all telepathic communication and manipulation.[7]
  • Render user invisible.[8]
  • Green Lantern: Rebirth revealed that only a certain type of willpower can use the ring effectively, as evidenced when Green Arrow’s “cynical” willpower barely allows him to generate a single arrow and leaves him exhausted after this feat.
  • Put humans into a state of suspended animation [9]
  • Fast healing of wounds.

Wow, now that is some crazy-ass ring!

GREEN LANTERN will still open on scheduled, June 17th, 2011
Starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. Martin Campbell will be directing using the script written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green.
