No AVENGERS For Favreau

Jon Favreau

Who’s going to direct THE AVENGERS? For a while, the name Jon Favreau has been favored as the top candidate, the man who will get the honor. After the success of IRON MAN, fans had no concern about Favreau’s possible involvement. But alas, it remains a rumor and nothing more because the director of the upcoming IRON MAN 2 talked to MTV and openly said that he does not want to helm THE AVENGERS..

“They’ll have to [find a different director], because I’m not going to be available,”
“It’s something I’m being the executive producer on, so I’ll definitely have input and a say.”

“It’s going to be hard, because I was so involved in creating the world of Iron Man and Iron Man is very much a tech-based hero, and then with ‘Avengers’ you’re going to be introducing some supernatural aspects because of Thor,”
“How you mix the two of those works very well in the comic books, but it’s going to take a lot of thoughtfulness to make that all work and not blow the reality that we’ve created.”

He’s got a point though, as cool as it is to see all those characters together in one ultimate Marvel awesomeness, there’s a chance it might fail because something gets lost or messed up in the equation or the formula. It would take a crazy script and crazy director. It’s a hard job with a hard pressure.
If Favreau can’t do it, then who can?
Plus forcing all these worlds to collide means focusing too much on a few and neglecting the others.
Rama’s SCREEN reader Frankie made a good point about X-Men 3 when it brought in so many mutants but most of them only got a few seconds of cameos, which stinks, because each of those characters is actually more intriguing than what the movie gave them credit for.

Who do you think has what it takes to direct THE AVENGERS?
