Of Course… George Lopez To Voice SPEEDY GONZALES That’s Not Racist!

George Lopez Speedy Gonzales

I’ve always wanted a SPEEDY GONZALES Movie. As a runner myself, Speedy and Forrest Gump are like 2 of my fictional role models, those guys can run like it’s nobody’s business. So I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited when hearing about this info. According to Hollywood Reporter, New Line is developing a hybrid (mix of live action and CG) movie of SPEEDY GONZALES and who’s gonna be the voice? Who else but George Lopez

Personally, I think Lopez is the wrong choice for this but Hollywood just likes throwing any Hispanic-related gigs in the direction of Lopez, it’s safe play. Out of all the Latino comedians/actors out there, he’s the most bankable one anyway.
Scribes Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen, the guys who co-wrote Toy Story, will write this adaptation based on the classic animated Looney Tunes character, the fastest mouse in all Mexico, withGeorge Lopez, Anne Lopez and Lynette Ramirez, Jerry Weintraub, Tracy Ryerson and Jill Arthur all producing the project.

Over the years, I’ve heard how some called SPEEDY GONZALES racist because they say it’s more or less an ethnic stereotype. Some joked about Speedy running from La Migra… or Speedy running across the border..
Frankly I never saw it that way or maybe I was just a naive kid, but for the sake of the movie, producer Anna has guaranteed that the story will not be set in the 1950s which was when Speedy was created.
Instead… it’s going to be set in present time and it’s about “a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at. That path becomes clearer once Speedy befriends a gun-shy race-car driver.” Anna said it’s passed the George’s Latino Seal Of Approval
