In November of 2009, DreamWorks Animation hired Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright/screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire (Robots) to pen the adaptation of THE GUARDIANS book series created by William Joyce, who brought us Rolie Polie Olie and Meet the Robinsons. . The books would be titled THE GUARDIANS OF CHILDHOOD and would be published in 2011, the story unites characters every child knows — Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Jack Frost and the Sandman — to defend the world from a Bogeyman-like villain. Each book deals with one of the guardians. Not too long after that, it was reported that Leonardo DiCaprio would voice Jack Frost. Well, there’s been a development and DiCaprio is no longer attached to the project..
According to Variety, Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Alec Baldwin and Isla Fisher will voice the lead roles in this DreamWorks Animation’s 3D epic whi has now been retitled RISE OF THE GUARDIANS. For some reason I can’t get rid of that Legend Of The Guardians movie last year from my mind every time I hear the word ‘Guardians’.
Peter Ramsey is still set to direct RISE OF THE GUARDIANS based on the books by Joyce who will co-direct. One of the exec producers is one of my favorite filmmakers, Guillermo Del Toro.
Here’s the current plot.
When Pitch (Law), an evil spirit akin to the Boogeyman, lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world.
Pine will replace DiCaprio as the voice of Jack Frost. Jackman will voice The Easter Bunny named Bunnymund. Baldwin voices North, which is a nickname for Santa Cluas and Fisher’s character is simply called Tooth, yes she’s The Tooth Fairy and no, there’s no Dwayne Johnson this time, thank God!
RISE OF THE GUARDIANS opens in theaters on November 21st, 2012
