I think there have been some worries about Rob Marshall taking on the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean franchise because Chicago, Memoirs Of A Geisha and the upcoming Nine aren’t exactly what you’d consider measurements to find out if Marshall’s got what it takes to tackle an action/adventure of this magnitude, this is one big franchise with loyal fanbase. Marshall previously confirmed that he is set to direct PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGERS TIDE but in a recent interview with comingsoon.net, he expressed uncertainties and approached it with caution because it all depends on Johnny Depp and the script…

“We’re still trying to figure out if it’s going to all happen,” he continued. “If it happens–I think Johnny’s doing a movie
with Angelina Jolie in the spring (that’s The Tourist)–so if it happens, we’ll start in the summer, and we’ll see. I’m excited. If it happens, it happens. I’d be thrilled. I just love Johnny and I’m excited about the genre.”

“I would need a script first,”
“It all comes from the script and the story. You serve the story and you find out what the story is and then you work from there, that’s it. It’s simple.”

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES is based  the  book by author Tim Powers, that features the legendary Blackbeard, here’s the official synopsis of the book…

“Puppeteer John Chandagnac, who was sailing to Jamaica to get revenge on the uncle who had stolen his father’s inheritance, has no choice but to join the buccaneers who have taken him prisoner–and soon, known now as the pirate Jack Shandy, he finds himself learning to survive in a treacherous new world of cutlass-fights, sea-battles, and voodoo magic on sun-blinded tropical islands. The legendary Blackbeard is assembling a ruthless navy of pirates living and undead to voyage to the fabled Fountain of Youth, and Jack Shandy must use magic, swordsmanship, and even his puppeteer skills to free himself and the girl he has fallen in love with from Blackbeard’s deadly supernatural domination.”

The movie’s co-screenwriter Terry Rossio told Empire that PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES will be inspired by Tim Powers‘ book, so it’s not necessary going to be a complete adaptation of the book.

Disney expects production to start in May 2010, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES will open in summer 2011
