The rumors were true, Robert De Niro confirmed to MTV that he, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino will star in THE IRISHMAN which will be directed by Martin Scorsese. Their buddy Harvey Keitel might also join the cast. All best friends, would be in one same movie.. feels like The Expendables of Mob flick stars ain’t it?! By the way, this will mark the first time Pacino and Scorsese ever collaborate.. it’s about time, huh?!..

But there is a slight change of plan..
If you recalled, the film was supposed to come with a companion film. Oscar winning scribe Steve Zaillian (Schindler’s List) wrote the script for the first part, while the second part will be adapted by Oscar winning scribe Eric Roth (Forrest Gump). Scorsese previously said that they’re going to make another gangster movie from the vantage point of the “older men looking back”. Here’s what De Niro said back in April..

“We have a more ambitious idea, hopefully, to make it a two-part type of film or two films,”
“It’s an idea that came about from Eric Roth to combine these movies using the footage from ‘Paint Houses’ to do another kind of a [film that is] reminiscent of a kind of ’8 1/2,’ ‘La Dolce Vita,’ [a] certain kind of biographical, semi-biographical type of Hollywood movie — a director and the actor — based on things Marty and I have experienced and kind of overlapping them.”

But now, De Niro doubts that that 2nd part would happen at all..

“We have a very good script that Steven Zaillian wrote, and that we’re definitely doing,”
“The other idea is more ambitious, to do one with Eric doing a flashback/flashforward kind of thing and to do two movies in one and then separate them as movies. I don’t know if that will happen.”

“[W]e do have the one that we’re definitely doing. Me, Joe Pesci, Pacino and Marty Scorsese directing,”

Hey, no companion film? That’s fine with me, as long as we the fans could get one great mobster flick with all those heavyweights involved..

THE IRISHMAN is based on a book I HEARD YOU PAINT HOUSES by author Charles Brandt, the story is based the life of the late mob assassin Frank Sheeran who supposedly was involved in the in the death of Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa. De Niro would play Frank “the Irishman” Sheeran, who is reputed to have carried out more than 25 mob murders.
He claimed he was the one who put two bullets in the back of Hoffa’s head. He also had intimate knowledge about the JFK assassination and though he wasn’t directly involved, he was sure it was a mob hit. He said that Hoffa was cremated and that’s why the world has never found the body.

By the way,.. Scorsese’s THE IRISHMAN is not to be confused with that other adaptation titled THE IRISHMAN based on the novel TO KILL THE IRISHMAN: THE WAR THAT CRIPPLED THE MAFIA starring the Punisher Ray Stevenson, the old multi-talented Christopher Walken, and the has-been Val Kilmer about “the true story of fearless Irish-American racketeer Danny Green who takes on the mob in the 1970s. The end result is the fall of several Mafia families and the defection of high-ranking mobsters.
