I remember last year before Inception arrived, actor Leonardo DiCaprio reportedly said to an interviewer that even during the filming process, he still didn’t understand what was going on in the story. But I think a lot of people understood Inception or what Nolan was trying to accomplish.
Now.. Terrence Malick‘s THE TREE OF LIFE on the other hand was quite a challenge. I personally enjoyed it but it’s biased since I’m a Malick’s fan… at the same time I can understand why many thought it was absolutely boring. Even Pitt’s co-star, Sean Penn thought it was confusing. He explained, via New Yorker, but not necessarily in a way that would trash the movie..
“I didn’t at all find on the screen the emotion of the script, which is the most magnificent one that I’ve ever read,”
“A clearer and more conventional narrative would have helped the film without lessening its beauty and its impact. Frankly, I’m still trying to figure out what I’m doing there and what I was supposed to add in that context. What’s more, Terry himself never managed to explain it to me clearly.”
“It’s a film I recommend on the condition that one go only without preconceptions. It’s up to each to find a personal emotional or spiritual connection. Those that reach this generally leave very moved.”
