Steven Spielberg Harvey

Seems like MATT HELM will have to wait another time, because the great Steven Spielberg has made up his mind and according to Variety, he will direct the new take on the 1944 Pulitzer-Prize-winning play HARVEY by Mary Chase, that was turned into a movie back in 1950 starring the late great Jimmy Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd who makes friends with a spirit taking the form of a human-sized rabbit named Harvey that only he sees. Their friendship affects every member of the family and the community.

I admired Stewart just as much as I idolized Marlon Brando and Charlton Heston. I enjoyed Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, It’s A Wonderful Life, Vertigo, and Rear Window but I gotta tell ya, I have not seen Harvey yet, so now I’m putting that on my must-see list before the remake hits theaters.
Speaking of which, this Spielberg project will be a co-production between 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks. This is the first adapted screenplay by bestselling novelist Jonathan Tropper (The Book of Joe, Everything Changes, Plan B)
Spielberg released this statement…
“I am very happy to be working again with my friend Tom Rothman who shepherded us through `Minority Report,’ and with Elizabeth and Carla, who I’m looking forward to collaborating with,”
“DreamWorks has experienced a creative and profitable relationship with 20th Century Fox in the past, and I look forward to renewing that time together.”
