THE GREY Might Get Re-released In October For Oscar Qualifying Run

January is usually the month where they’d dump crappy movies in, but this year’s January hasn’t been that bad in my opinion. I enjoyed Haywire, I thought The Grey was excellent and the horror flick The Innkeepers was a lot of fun. The Playlist chatted with The Grey‘s director Joe Carnahan who explained why they couldn’t release the film last year and that Open Road Films has plan to make possible for either the movie or Liam Neeson to receive an Oscar consideration..
“If we’d been able to launch in Toronto, which was our initial plan, but we wound up six weeks behind because of effects,”
“Combining that with the fact that Liam was doing ‘Taken 2’ and wouldn’t be available for all the events you have to go to. It’s like an election. You’re running for office. So since we didn’t have those things set, we said let’s just release it when it’s all ready. And let’s ignore the fact that everybody says January’s a dumping ground. They make too many movies these days for any one month to be a dumping ground. Obviously ‘Taken’ was a January release for Liam that did quite well. Honestly, it’s nice to even be mentioned, the idea that people even think it’s awards-worthy. That’s flattering. Open Road has said flat out and sort of scrawled it in blood that they’re going to release the film in October 2012 for a qualifying run, which is great.”
THE GREY opens this weekend
From director @carnojoe (THE A TEAM, NARC, SMOKIN’ ACES), THE GREY stars #LiamNeeson (TAKEN, UNKNOWN) along with @FrankGrillo (WARRIOR, upcoming LAY THE FAVORITE, GANGSTER SQUAD), @DMulroney (J. EDGAR, upcoming BIG MIRACLE), #DallasRoberts (THE L WORD) and @_JoeAnderson (ABC’s upcoming series THE RIVER, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE).
SYNOPSIS: In THE GREY, Liam Neeson leads an unruly group of oil-rig roughnecks when their plane crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness. Battling mortal injuries and merciless weather, the survivors have only a few days to escape the icy elements – and a vicious pack of rogue wolves on the hunt – before their time runs out.
