According to Heat Vision, Lionsgate has set March 23rd, 2012 as the release date for the adaptation of THE HUNGER GAMES, directed by Gary Ross. Lionsgate wants to bank on the spring break and Easter holiday. So far, the movie has no other competition in that weekend but will open one week after 21 JUMP STREET the movie and one week before WRATH OF THE TITANS..
THE HUNGER GAMES, based on Suzanne Collins‘ novel series about teen gladiators in a reality show where they’d battle other teens to the death, these are teens “from the 12 districts that make up what is left of the USA, which is run by a cruel totalitarian government.”..
The heavily guarded script rewritten by Billy Ray is ready to go for this first installment which would be the start of a trilogy expected to have the same success as Twilight movies since the target demographics for Collins’ books also include both the youth and adult, so the franchise could reach “multiple audience quadrants”
The 2nd book is CATCHING FIRE. The final book in the trilogy is MOCKINGJAY
Here’s the book synopsis for THE HUNGER GAMES..
“Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, “The Hunger Games.” The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat’s sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.”
