THE KARATE KID Sequel Is In The Planning?

You can tell my review that I was super impressed with THE KARATE KID remake starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. I didn’t expect it to be that excellent. Most of us, including yours truly, were hating on it since the day that the project was put into planning but now, it may well be one of the most must-see movies of the year. THE KARATE KID opened with $55 Million at the domestic box office, which is decent, considering the production budget was $40 Million. Sadly it had to beat my most anticipated movie of the year, THE A-TEAM by a lot…
And because THE KARATE KID‘s box office result surpassed its budget, via Deadline, Sony’s Columbia Pictures is doing what any other Hollywood studio would be doing in this scenario.. just common sense..
The execs are meeting with screenwriters to find ideas for the sequel.
The original Karate Kid movie had 3 sequels, one of which starred the now Oscar winner Hillary Swank.
Wouldn’t it be something if.. say Swank or Ralph Macchio made an appearance in the sequel to this new KARATE KID!? Just a thought..
If Columbia greenlit the sequel, then this will be Jaden Smith‘s little franchise, as he follows in the footsteps of his dad, Will Smith who’s used to being in franchise (Bad Boys, Men In Black)
None of the stars (Jaden, Chan, Taraji) were signed to do more than just one movie but director Harald Zwart isn’t against the idea of returning at all. In a chat with comingsoon, this is Zwart said…
Well, that’s always a tempting idea, and I think we all would love to go back and have an experience again. Certainly, I remember just watching Jaden and Jackie on and off camera and thinking, “They’re such a good movie couple.” They’re just a good two characters I think. I definitely think we can take these two people somewhere else, but that’s all up to the success. I’m open for anything.
