The Last JAWS Shark Was Found.. In A Junkyard
June 7, 2010RamaNo CommentsForrest Gump, Jaws, steven spielberg, Tom Hanks
I’m gonna be away for a while today, I have a big meeting that I need to attend but before I go, here’s something that I personally found interesting, and so would you if you’re a fan of the 1975 original film Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg. Those of us who’ve been to Universal Studios would think that the Jaws shark hanging by its tail for people to to take photos with was one of the mechanical props used for the movie but.. that version actually came later on, it’s only 15 years old..it wasn’t one of the original four. Yup, turns out Spielberg’s crew created four…
This year is the 35th anniversary of Jaws and via Yahoo, all this time we were under the impression that they only made three of those metal creatures, each were 25-feet long, the heads were 400 lbs each with jaws the size of a small human and all of them were named Bruce, after Spielberg’s lawyer, Bruce Ramer. Fair enough.. lawyers.. sharks..
Anyways, a reporter by the name of Cory Turner, big fan of the movie, found out from Spielberg’s spokesman that all the original sharks were destroyed because they thought they had no other use for them but Turner found out, after theories circulating on facebook, that a fourth Bruce existed, created months after the first three were constructed and so after lots of phone calls, he finally found the 4th Bruce in a junkyard in the Sun Valley area of Southern California, just minutes away from Universal.
Turner brought the team who built Bruce — art department members Joe Alves and Roy Arbogast to verify the shark’s authenticity.
“It’s the real one,” Arbogast told Turner after examining the creature. “It’s just kinda’ nice to see it again after 25 or 30 years. It’s amazing that it’s still here.”
Wow,.. now that is a cool story..
Ya know.. I’ve always imagined myself someday, being filthy rich and instead of collecting paintings or statues or manuscripts like some other rich folks do.. I’d have a giant room for movie props collection. I’m sure somebody out there has done it, so it’s not really a completely original idea but hey, I think certain movie props need to be appreciated.
Some I might have to find by going through auction route while others are probably in their resting place sadly in a storage room or junkyard somewhere.
What about the running shoes that Tom Hanks wore in Forrest Gump.. now those are worth collecting.. since I’m a marathoner and all.
Which movie prop would you collect?
