THE MADNESS of Guillermo Del Toro

First he wanted to direct JK Rowling HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS and then we heard that he wanted to do back to back two films of J.R Tolkien’s THE HOBBIT… and now he wants to film a movie version of another book, this time by author H.P. Lovercraft?
Which book does he really want to do?
Either this guy wants to do everything or he just loves causing hype and confusion for the internet world.
He spoke to MTV about his interest in making the movie adaptation of the book AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS originally published in 1936 about a group of explorers in Antartica who stumble onto a group of creatures called “Elder Things” and what comes after that is terror after terror. Giullermo’s cup of tea.
“I remember when I was a kid out of the studios came the big event horror movies, ‘The Exorcist,’ ‘Alien,’ ‘Jaws,’ ‘The Shining,’” del Toro recalled. “It is my hope that this movie will be a tentpole movie [of that sort]. It has the scope of a Shackleton epic exploration movie but it’s full of tentacled things.”
“It’s not hard to be faithful to Lovecraft because what is great about the novel is that it’s a compilation of really dry scientific annotations that happen to be annotating something really scary. There is no character or dramatic thread,” he insisted. “You take those document and you then create a story. If you were [just rigidly faithful] you would be doing a National Geographic special on a crew that disappeared in an exploration mission.
“I’m happy with [my script],” he continued. “I know some people would like a happier ending but I’m happy with the ending there is.”
This is probably what a day is like in the life of Guillermo Del Toro. He goes into a bookstore, he picks up a novel, reads the synopsis on the back cover and says “I want to direct the movie version of this one” and then he goes on to the next aisle and he sees another paperback novel, reads briefly and says “I wanna do this one too”. By the time he finishes his thought, he realizes there are thousands of books in the damn store and he shouts out loud “I’m going to do all of them”.
I love your movies, Mr. Del Toro, but make up your mind!
* Here’s a recent clip at a gathering that Guillermo Del Toro was a part of while promoting the movie THE ORPHANAGE. This might just be the confirmation that he’ll be directing the Hobbit, who knows??…. it’s in Spanish and French.
