TWILIGHT VS. HARRY POTTER, By Guest Blogger Yara Gomez

Yara Gomez is a good friend of mine and a fellow movie aficionado. She’s also a recurring contributing blogger for Rama’s SCREEN. She’s generous enough to share with us some of her movie-related editorial articles from time to time and the following is her latest work..

You have no idea how ecstatic I was to learn that the premiere for Twilight: Breaking Dawn pt. 1 did not supersede Harry Potter in box office totals! Of course we still have to wait for the final installment of this franchise, but I’m crossing my fingers that Harry takes all! No, I’m not necessarily a Twilight hater, I actually just finished watching Breaking Dawn pt. 1. Yet I could never forgive Twilight beating out Harry Potter (Just like I’m still mad at the world for letting Avatar earn 1 billion… REALLY PEOPLE!?!?)Twilight must recognize its own inadequacy when confronted with Harry’s superiority…

Twilight no doubt is highly entertaining. When not cringing every time Kristen Stewart attempts to act, the unfolding of the plot is quite enchanting. But it is shallow. Twilight tries so hard to appear meaningful and relative, yet underneath its Robert Pattison hunky façade, it lacks substance. The characters have no depth. They were human, they became vampires… then they became veggie vamps because they grew a conscience… and end scene. The Carlisle’s are good people, while other vampies may be evil. Werewolves and vampires are enemies, but Jacob is friendly. And Werewolves came up with a fancy name for soul mate. I think that about covers it. Elementary boy meets girl, boy can’t get girl, boy finally gets girl premise.

Harry Potter is not only entertaining, but it goes beyond anything Twilight tries to even reach. Beginning with acting. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint may not quite be Oscar worthy actors, but they know the concept of subtle acting, they translate pain and anxiety perfectly, there is no awkwardness in their witty banter, and whatever they may lack is made up for in an incredible supporting cast. Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Ralph Fiennes, Alan Rickman, and GARY OLDMAN!!!! I mean come on! Name ONE Twilight actor that can hold a candle to anyone of these! Yea, didn’t think so!

The themes presented in Harry Potter are extremely human, and immensely more complex then Twilight. At the surface we see courage, good vs. evil, sacrifice, and love. But beneath it all, there are back-stories that could bring about a book of its own. I would read a book about Snape in a heartbeat! Stephen King put it best, ““Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.” I don’t know who was the first to say this, however it is true, J.K. Rowling wrote a better love story in ONE chapter then Meyers did in 4 books! The inner conflicts within each character, the themes hidden within themes, its simple… Harry Potter makes you think. It’s epic. Twilight is a good way to kill time.

Sorry Twi-hards, there is nothing hardcore about pretending to be a vamp… you’re simply douches with fangs!
Will Twilight beat out Harry Potter in the end? If there is any justice in this world, HELL NO!

  1. I agree. Harry Potter was the first story I read to my son when he was small. It has been a bonding experience for us. We have gone to see the movies, played trivia and re watched them when the new ones cames out. They stand the test of time and you care about the people. While Twilight series is entertaining and my son and I discuss, it is nowhere as encompassing or as deep. You don’t have the struggle with good/bad ying/yang. Harry Potter is the winner hands down.
