WB has been wanting to make ROBOTECH the movie since 2007 and it’s finally moving forward, Heat Vision said studio has hired Nic Mathieu to direct this big budget project based on the anime about giant mechanical warriors, so yes, expect it to be in the same vein as Transformers movies.
Some of the producers are Akiva Goldsman, Tobey Maguire, Matthew Plouffe, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell.

I didn’t grow up watching ROBOTECH when I was a kid, but someone named Tobey Maguire did, but no word yet if Maguire will also make this his starring vehicle.
Years ago, Lawrence Kasdan wrote the draft, and team Alfred Gough and Milas Millar took a crack at the script.
Now with Mathieu on board, they may hire another scribe to do a rewrite.

Real quick now, for those of us who are not familiar with ROBOTECH, it was 1980s cartoon series that was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series. Scientific advances discovered in an alien starship that crashed on a South Pacific island. With this technology, Earth developed giant robotic machines or mecha (many of which were capable of transforming into vehicles) to fight three successive extraterrestrial invasions. There were also many straight to VHS versions and spin-offs of this title if I remember correctly.
It was said that the movie is planned as a re-imagining of the original Robotech universe (with new updated mecha and character designs) and will take place several years in the future, departing from the original cartoon’s 2009 setting.
