Why Guillermo Del Toro Doesn’t Want To Make HELLBOY III

Since Guillermo Del Toro doesn’t do THE HOBBIT anymore, that means he’s got all the time in the world for HELLBOY III right? wrong! Those of you who’ve been with Rama’s SCREEN for a while now would know that this awesome filmmaker (and he really is, even in person at Comic-Con, he was just a super duper fan-friendly dude, an enthusiastic geek himself) got a gazillion projects that he’s attached to either as producer or director or scribe. AT THE MOUNTAIN OF MADNESS is just one, I can’t wait for HAUNTED MANSION reboot and especially the upcoming DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (that trailer looked wicked!!). MTV asked GDT if he’s ever going to go back for a HELLBOY third installment..
“You know, I think that everyone should ask Ron [Perlman],”
“I had dinner with [Perlman] last night. He said ‘six hours [in the makeup chair], what do you want?’” And he’s doing ‘Sons of Anarchy’ without makeup. He’s spoiled! He likes to be the big cheese without the makeup session.”
“I would love to do it,”
“But the heartbreak for me is that I know how it ends and I don’t know if I want to see that ending. But I would love to do it.”
SPOILER ALERT! well, I’m sure you’ve guessed it by now, what GDT meant was that Hellboy in HELLBOY III is supposed to meet his maker,.. as in dead.
So there’ll be NO having a baby family time, white picket fence or living in the suburb for Hellboy and Liz Sherman.
But back in 2008, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola spoke about when he wants hellboy to die Vs. when GDT wants hellboy to die
“The problem is, what del Toro’s talked about to me is that ‘Hellboy III’ would be the end of Hellboy,”
“And here’s where we have the big conflict. My version of Hellboy in the comics is a finite story, but it’s going to take me 15 years to get to the ending. If he makes ‘Hellboy III’ and it’s the death of Hellboy, I’m left doing the comic going, ‘But I’m not done yet.’
“My Hellboy is not going to have kids,”
“My Hellboy is going to die, but I want to be the one who does that. And if del Toro does my ending, there won’t be a lot of surprise when I get to the end of the comic.”
Do you want to see Hellboy’s death in HELLBOY III or should GDT keep Hellboy’s story going? Or is this a franchise you could care less about?
