Zach Galifianakis

Not too long ago, Zach Galifianakis played a homeless guy in Gigantic and some dude named Dave in What Happens In Vegas, I even remember him in Out Cold, which I still think is one of the most under-appreciated comedy movie of the decade,..but THE HANGOVER has opened doors for the fat bearded comedian with the funniest web FERNS series. The movie about guys who couldn’t handle Vegas was not just a box office hit this summer, it also went down as the highest grossing R-rated comedy of all time

There are talks of HANGOVER 2 which I’m not too excited about, and then DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS and his upcoming DUE DATE has wrapped production.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Zach has signed on to star in IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY, the coming-of-age dramedy based on a young-adult novel by author Ned Vizzini about a depressed teenage boy who is sent to a mental institution, where he ends up in the adult ward and meets a number of offbeat adults as well as a quirky teenage girl
Hmm.. so.. it’s like a teenage One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest but with romance?
From writer-directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden of Half-Nelson. So we might see Zach unleash his dramatic side as one of the adult patients.
The one to play the quirky teenage girl is Emma Roberts (Hotel For Dogs, Nancy Drew). Nobody has been cast yet to play the teenage boy but I’d cast Josh Hutcherson but he’s busy filming RED DAWN remake.

Here’s the official synopsis of the book..

“Like many ambitious New York City teenagers, Craig Gilner sees entry into Manhattan’s Executive Pre-Professional High School as the ticket to his future. Determined to succeed at life-which means getting into the right high school to get into the right college to get the right job-Craig studies night and day to ace the entrance exam, and does. That’s when things start to get crazy.

At his new school, Craig realizes that he isn’t brilliant compared to the other kids; he’s just average, and maybe not even that. He soon sees his once-perfect future crumbling away. The stress becomes unbearable and Craig stops eating and sleeping-until, one night, he nearly kills himself.

Craig’s suicidal episode gets him checked into a mental hospital, where his new neighbors include a transsexual sex addict, a girl who has scarred her own face with scissors, and the self-elected President Armelio. There, isolated from the crushing pressures of school and friends, Craig is finally able to confront the sources of his anxiety.

Ned Vizzini, who himself spent time in a psychiatric hospital, has created a remarkably moving tale about the sometimes unexpected road to happiness. For a novel about depression, it’s definitely a funny story.”
